Nokia X6 to come Down Under sooner rather then later and the N97 mini has been delayed
Feb 2nd
It seems as the trouble Nokia have been having with the N97 in regards to software issues has forced the delay of the “mini” Apparently this delay is to make sure that the issues that have plagued the N97 don’t also plague it’s little brother. While all this is going on Nokia have released another update to the N97 software, increasing the version from 20.0.0.019 to 21.0.0.045, Nokia have noted that this update improved scrolling, and call reliablity. As of yesterday this hadn;’t filtered through to Australian’s N97 variant.
Nokia’s latest XpressMusic range, the X Series, is coming to Australia. At this stage it is currently being tested by networks and is planning for a first half of the year release. Network availability and pricing is yet to be confirmed and also will depend on whether the Comes with Music version is taken or not. As more information comes to hand, I will update with details.
Editorial: Apple’s iPad – The Good and The Not So Good
Jan 30th
So this morning Apple announced their highly anticipated tablet, The iPad, strangly enough, Apple don’t actually hold any trademarks or domains featuring iPad name, but like the iPhone, which was owned by Cisco, that should change fairly soon. So onto the device, the iPad itself is an extremely polished device in way of design, very much in the Steve Jobs vain, sporting a 9.7″ Multi-Touch, multi angeled IPS LCD screen, 16GB-32GB-64GB variants, WiFi only or WiFi and 3G. It comes in at 9.56 inches (242.8 mm) High, 7.47 inches (189.7 mm) Wide and 0.5 inch (13.4 mm) Thick, which is really amazing considering
its power and speed. Under the bonnet of the iPad is the Apple A4, a 1Ghz Samsung made, Apple designed SOC that contains the Processor, Graphics, IO, Memory all on the chip, this allows the iPad to render 720p HD video with ease and also flick through photos, play 3D games and change orentation with breaking a sweat, it’s also extremly low power, giving the iPad 10 hours battery use with 30 days standby. Positioned to take on netbooks head to head, this could speel the end to the netbook category that has helped a number of PC manufacturers capture a significant portion of market share in the portable computing space. Can Apple again dominate a market with it’s first product in a new market? Their track record certainly seems so.

It’s been a while since i last posted but i thought this was well worth it. The new iPhone 3G S, announced on Monday will be hitting Australia on the 26th of June. At this stage both Optus and Vodafone have taken the handset, but in usual Apple style nothing in regards to pricing or availability has been released. Vodafone has also now released visual voicemail for the iPhone, which correct me if I’m wrong is the first carrier in Australia to do so. Stay tuned, we will get more word on pricing and stock as i find out.

Jan 28th

After being released into selected markets in October last year and selling out in Moscow and Hong Kong within hours of it’s launch, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has now hit the million mark, coinciding with the successful UK launch. With Australia hoping the have the device on our shores by Easter, this is a great milestone for Nokia with this being there first mass market touch screen handset.
“The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been received very positively and this milestone is just further proof that people all over the world want a device that is not only a great music experience, but also makes the most of touch screen technology,” said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia.
Bringing with it a resistive touch 3.2″ 16:9 widescreen, 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, 8GB in-built storage and single touch upload of videos or photos to sites such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook. We are hoping to have a play with one within the next week or so, We will put up a post with my thoughts about the unit as well as some photos and video showcasing the workings of the unit.
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic To Hit Australia in Q1…hopefully
Jan 10th

UPDATE: The 5800 will ship with “Comes with Music” which will give owners unlimited downloads from Nokia’s Music Store for free for 12 months.
UPDATE: I have now seen information confirming that Virgin will be taking the 5800 but no date has been given, though it’s looking like March.
Word has it that Nokia’s first touchscreen handset, the 5800 “Tube” should land on our shores anytime in Q1 of this year. It is also believed that the handset will be avaiable on both Optus and Three with the possiblity of Vodafone signing on before a firm shipping date is announced.
Palm's new-ness: Palm pre
Jan 8th
Well it seems Palm has pulled itself out of the depths of dispair with this little beauty. Packing a host of features including a 3.1 inch 320 x 240 multitouch display, gesture support, full slide out QWERTY, TI’s OMAP CPU to give “Laptop style power” , EV-DO Rev A, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS, A2DP Stereo Bluetooth, 8GB flash memory built in along with a 3.1 Megapix camera with LED flash for good measure and wireless charger. Handset is due out on Sprint in first half of this year. Expect pricing and a firm date soonish. For all the low-down on the handset including offical photos, coverage from the CES press conference, hands on and almost everything you can get to satisfy your Palm pre cravings head on over to Engadget. Oh and by the way if you bought Palm stock over the last few days, you will be happy, it’s jumped 35% on the back of the Pre’s accountment.
UPDATE: Video of full press conference video has been posted on Palm’s website. Watch it here. (Requires Quicktime) Or we have mirrored Engadget’s posting of the video above.
My Thoughts: I think this was needed from Palm and i think everyone knows it (it’s stock sure did), i wasn’t a big fan of PalmOS but seeing the photos of this in action and seeing what it looks like and what it is capable of i think it’s a big win for Palm. It’s definatley iPhone-ish with it’s dock and multitouch, but having a physical slide out portrait keyboard and gesture control it really gives you more input options in a natural form. Hey and who can forget the awesome wireless charger, the Touchstone or “Puck” as the Palm reps ahev been calling it. This thing better come to Australia. Hopefully i can get my hands on one for a hands-on demo closer to the release date.
